PRESS RELEASE
Curry County Awarded FY26 Recycling and Illegal Dumping Grant
Curry County has been awarded $28,220 through the Recycling and Illegal Dumping (RAID) Grant from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). This grant program addresses illegal dumpsites, improves recycling, and promotes environmentally responsible practices.
With this funding, Curry County will purchase solar-powered Bigbelly Smart Max trash compactors for the Honorable Judge Ruben E. Nieves Courtyard on Main Street to support events such as Food Truck Fridays, as well as for the Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds to help reduce litter.
Built on Bigbelly’s Smart Max platform, each unit is a fully enclosed, solar-powered compactor with approximately 150 gallons of capacity and 5–10 times the holding capability of a traditional trash bin. The compactors are equipped with sensors that monitor fullness levels and bin status, helping prevent overflows, reduce collection frequency, and improve overall waste management in high-traffic areas.
“We are excited to bring this green alternative to Curry County. These compactors do more than just hold trash—they utilize renewable energy to maximize efficiency, prevent overflows, and help keep our public spaces clean. We look forward to the installation this spring and the operational savings this technology will bring,” said County Manager Lance Pyle.
