THE PRISON RAPE ELIMINATION ACT (PREA) OF 2003 IS A FEDERAL LAW THAT PROHIBITS SEXUAL MISCONDUCT IN CORRECTIONAL SETTING SUCH AS PRISONS, JAILS, LOCKUPS, JUVENILE FACILITIES, AND IMMIGRATION DETENTION FACILITIES. PREA APPLIES TO ALL INMATES, EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, AND VOLUNTEERS.

UNDER THIS LAW, SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

1- Inmate on inmate sexual assault and abuse
2- Staff on inmate sexual assault/abuse
3-Sexual harassment of inmates by staff or another inmate
4- Retaliation for making a PREA report

CURRY COUNTY DETENTION CENTER’S ROLE IN THE PRISON RAPE ELIMINATION ACT
It is the mission of the Curry County Detention Center to provide a safe and secure environment
for all inmates ensuring their right to be free from the threat of any form of sexual abuse, sexual
harassment, and retaliation.
The Curry County Detention Center maintains zero tolerance toward any form of sexual assault,
sexual harassment, and retaliation between inmates and staff, contractors, volunteers, and other
inmates and enforces this policy in compliance with the PREA standards.
Curry County Detention Center is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for
staff and inmates. Every report is taken seriously and all allegations are thoroughly, promptly,
and objectively investigated.

REPORT SEXUAL ABUSE / HARASSMENT
If you have information regarding a Curry County Detainee who has been the victim of sexual
abuse or sexual harassment while under Curry County custody, please report it by calling the
PREA Report Line at 575-763-1733 or 575-763-1490.
 
Calls are recorded, and messages are checked Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

 

Curry County Detention Center Detainee Programs

  • 1-24-hour medical and mental health services.
  • 2-In-house Mental Health prevention, intervention, and program referrals within
    the community and statewide.
  • 3-Medication Assisted Treatment for opiates and other substance abuse
    dependencies.
  • 4-Evidenced-based educational programs in person and on detainee-issued tablets.
  • 5- Faith-Based community programs provided by Curry County Detention
    Chaplain and community volunteers.
  • 6- Sexual Abuse prevention, intervention, and trauma counseling provided by

    ARISE Rape Crises Center.
  • 7-Detainee Medicaid Enrollment
  • 8-Veteran crises intervention provided by Goodwill Industries.
  • 9- Detainee work programs kitchen, laundry, porters, and outside work details.
